WOW! Shared a rib eye steak here, KING cut 16 oz for $60+. It was an incredible, amazing piece of meat. Crisp exterior, tender interior and SO much flavor! Amoungst the best I have ever had. Extremely expensive but worth it for the most part. The bland discs of sliced and minute fried potatoes were shameful for the price of this dinner as was the plate of vegetables, which we assumed would be streamed mixed fresh veggies or something, but ended up being huge hunks of raw onion, some raw whole celery stalks and a couple of slices of tomato - again - shameful.We also had a $20 plate of shrimp chop suey. Delicious beyond belief with many huge shrimps and fresh, wonderful vegetables.Cheesy "Chinese" food restaurant decor, very dark but comfortable. Attentive staff.Very enjoyable experience.

This place is special, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. There's nothing like the House of Chan (read: The Chan) and, I doubt there will ever be anything like it.From the second you hoist open the heavyweight green door, you feel like you've entered your second home (house) of Chan. Staff are friendly, mirrors are complimentary, and the bar is lively and exciting. Oh, what a place!Over the years, me, my family and I have shared some incredible memories at the Chan. We've tried it all. Dish nights. Steak nights. Dish AND Steak nights. Martinis. Wine. We've over-indulged in the crispy wonton noodles, and we haven't had enough of the Butterfly Shrimp. We're always left wanting more, and just writing this review makes me crave the lean yet juicy Ribs. Penny is a class act/owner, and is always super friendly to talk to.Thank you HOUSE OF CHAN!

You cannot find a better place for a great steak and friendly local service. The staff know who you are and they pay attention to your needs. The experience is even better since they have moved.

A TRIP TO THE PAST House of Chan's new location just west of Avenue Rd. on the north side is open for business again. I have been frequenting the original restaurant for about 50 years.Damn, it is always the same. Isn't that boring....not at all. It is one of the only restaurants in the city where the servers, food and seats are always the same, no surprises. When you enter the new location is quite a shock as the size of the restaurant has shrunk significantly. Is this an error or not, that remains to be seen.All I know is that you must be prepared to wait if you come at the busy times, which, by the way, is almost all the time. As I entered the new facility I was amazed to note that it looked almost identical to the 50 year old restaurant left behind. It actually made me feel good. The waiters seemed to be the same except older but more experienced.Speaking of experience, it too was boring excellent. The steaks and seafood is always mouth-watering and made to perfection. They also have time tested Chinese entrees that they have been serving since the dawn of time. Somehow the east and west never have a fight on these dishes. I would say the price point is in keeping with the better steak houses in town. The choices at the stand up bar are plentiful. What else can I say. If you expect fine dining don't go. This is a legend amongst its forever clients. NO SURPRISES....WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET.

Came here with 11 others for a friend's birthday after doing some Internet searching for steakhouses. At first glance, this didn't seem like a steakhouse at all, but one of those Chinese-American restaurants you see in movies/TV. We arrived at about 6:30 on a Saturday, and there wasn't any problem getting a table, despite the restaurant's no-reservations policy. Closer to the end of our meal, there was a pretty large crowd waiting for tables.A lot of of us ordered the prime rib steak at the recommendation of the friendly waiter - and it turned out to be a great recommendation. The beef had great flavour and texture with the bone-in. The steaks come with a side of fried onions and potatoes, which were filling, but the onions especially took away from the flavour of the steak. I'd definitely recommend the great food and service at House of Chan. I didn't get a chance to try the lobster tails, but that's definitely on the list for next time!

I come here for good steak, potatoes, and fried onions. And the stone crab claws when they are available. I don't come here for Chinese food. Steak and stone crab claws! Like Chris Tucker said in Rush Hour "Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?!"

Currently my favourite steak house. I've been here twice, and both time the steak was outstanding. Perfectly cooked and excellent flavour.

Old school style. This is like going to a dirty dinner, that serves the best key lime pie...but its a diner.......The Chan (as it is known by the lovals) is a great place. You go for the over all experience of which includes a dark dining room (which is great) and really good food.This is also a local "place" where the locals have been going for years.Great steak, great lobster, -don't go for the chinese food- there is MUCH better in toronto. Its also one of the few places that serves Joes Stonecrabs.Must haves, Steak, Lobster, Fried Onions, Lobster Roll, Ribs, Tomatoes (notice not talking to much about chinese dishes) ....and the house fried rice..Will set you back about 200 bucks, but don't expect any great atmosphere....just great food....Been here about 30 times -pretty consistant- Sit in the main front room....not the back room.

Dark, musty, sexy and surreal. Okay, yes, they do serve Chinese food, but forgettaboutit, go for the steak. This steak house may not look the part from the exterior, but make no mistake, it is. Steak rule 3: if it smells like a steak house, it is a steak house. For the past five decades, House of Chan has been a coveted Toronto keepsake to famous folk and ordinary steak connoisseurs like me.Expect to drop an arm (and perhaps half a leg), but it's worth it. The à la carte menu may be daunting so allow me to break it down. Two people, one steak, one lobster, two sides. Perfection. The owner is a charming and engaging man who loves to name-drop, but I suppose he can, since he's dropping some big names. I'm sure that their Chinese offerings (like the egg foo yong, a childhood favourite) are equally delicious, but when I think Chinese food, I like to go for "fye dollar fly rice".I love steak.

When you first see this place, you sort of question why people love it. Decorated with the cheesy, typical Chinese writing stating "House of Chan" with a red flashing light, you just can't help thinking this place is sketchy. You walk in, waiters are dressed in the typical tie and vest. Place is painted red with a few touches of Asian images and typical bamboo. It's also quite small. However, if you order this steak - you won't be disappointed. I don't eat steak myself, but my friends who are absolute steak-lovers said it was amazing. I ordered the lobster & shrimp dish and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was impeccable too.
